Bass Face: Dr. Jax Turns Pure Intentions heavy After Dark

Within the Pure Intentions universe, every event serves a purpose. BASS FACE is loud, sweaty, and unapologetic dubstep with no genre politics and no pretension, just bass that moves bodies and locks rooms together.

Curated by Dr. Jax, co-founder of Pure Intentions and one half of Dr. Romance, BASS FACE has become the outlet for high-pressure, late-night energy, especially when it lands at an intimate, system-forward venue like The Rabbit Hole

We caught up with Dr. Jax to talk about the intention behind BASS FACE, curating chaos, and where the series is headed in 2026.

NOLA EDM: For people discovering you through BASS FACE — who is Dr. Jax, and what does this dubstep series represent within the Pure Intentions universe?

Dr. Jax: For people discovering me through Nola EDM, I’m Dr. Jax —co founder of Pure Intentions and 1/2 of Dr. Romance. I am a chaotic curator, and I have a deep respect for sound that actually moves people. I’m not just here to throw shows; I’m here to create moments where bass, energy, and community collide in a real way.

BASS FACE represents the raw, no-filter side of the Pure Intentions universe. It’s where we let dubstep be loud, sweaty, and unapologetic — no genre politics, no pretension, just heavy music and real reactions. It’s about booking artists who bring intention behind the chaos and giving space to both rising talent and cult favorites to absolutely lose control.

At its core, BASS FACE is a release. It’s a place where locals and tourists, bass heads and first-timers, can all make the same face when the drop hits. Within Pure Intentions, it’s the reminder that even when things get rowdy, the intention is still pure: community first, energy honest, and bass felt in your chest.

NOLA EDM: BASS FACE is billed as a high-pressure, late-night dubstep experience.

What kind of energy were you aiming to create at The Rabbit Hole, especially as a Pygmalion after-party?

Dr. Jax: We were aiming for controlled chaos. As a Pygmalion after-party, BASS FACE at The Rabbit Hole wasn’t meant to ease people down — it was meant to snap them back awake. We wanted that moment where you walk in already buzzing from the night and immediately realize, oh, this is where things get unhinged.

The energy goal was high-pressure, late-night, no-escape bass. The Rabbit Hole is perfect for that because it’s intimate and a little lawless; you’re close to the DJ, close to each other, and there’s no hiding.

As an after-party, it was about release. Pygmalion sets the tone, and BASS FACE lets people shed the polish and go feral. Sweat, bass face, hands up, zero judgment. We wanted people leaving at minimum 4 a.m. feeling wrecked in the best way — like they experienced something exclusive, loud, and a little crazy, but still rooted in intention and community

NOLA EDM: This lineup brings together heavy hitters and local favorites.

How did you approach curating the artists for this night, and what did you want the crowd to feel from start to finish?

Dr. Jax: Selecting these line ups is very meaningful and intentional to me. I wanted artists who I know can command a room, but who each bring a slightly different flavor of pressure. The goal wasn’t just heavy for the sake of heavy — it was pacing, contrast, and escalation. Every set needed to feel like it was handing the room off to the next artist with purpose.

I leaned into a mix of heavy hitters and local favorites because that’s the heartbeat of New Orleans. The locals understand the room instinctively — they know how to read the crowd, how late-night energy really works here. Pairing that with artists who have proven talent creates this back-and-forth where nobody’s coasting. Everyone shows up sharp.

NOLA EDM: The Rabbit Hole is an intimate, system-forward room.

How does a space like this influence the way you play and connect with the crowd during a bass-driven set?

Dr. Jax: A space like The Rabbit Hole forces real connection. It’s intimate and system-forward, so every bass hit matters and every crowd reaction feeds back into how I play. You’re reading faces, bodies, energy in real time — not hiding behind anything.

That closeness turns the set into a shared experience instead of a performance. The bass isn’t just loud, it’s felt, and when the room locks in together, you can push it further and make every drop land with intention.

NOLA EDM: Looking ahead, where does BASS FACE fit into your plans for 2026?

More editions, new cities, deeper bass explorations, or expansions of the series we should be watching for?

Dr. Jax: I have big plans this year for BASS FACE. This is the first time in 4 years, since the inception of Pure Intentions, that I have had the time to focus on a project that is a complete expansion of myself.

I am going to push myself more than ever to make this event people constantly look forward to. Big names, big growth, new opportunities. It is a very exciting time!
