GZZRD DUBS on Syntherapy, DEER GUTS, and Building Pressure at The Rabbit Hole

Ahead of Duck n Moose’s Syntherapy showcase at The Rabbit Hole, we caught up with GZZRD (gzzrd_dubs) — a producer and DJ fifteen years deep whose sound has been making serious waves across the South. Known for his ability to build tension, flip hip-hop energy into bass-driven chaos, and guide crowds through full-arc journeys, GZZRD is stepping into the night with something special: the debut of DEER GUTS, a new collaborative project with iowetheplug that blends percussion-forward dubstep, MC energy, and unapologetic Southern grit.

From heady openings to abrasive climaxes, this set is built to move bodies, bend expectations, and leave the room changed.

NOLA EDM: For those meeting you for the first time — who is GZZRD?

Tell us about your background, your sound, and the energy you bring behind the decks.

GZZRD: I’m fifteen years in the game, and over the last two years, I’ve really locked in and shaped GZZRD into what it is now. My sets have never been about me. They’re about the music and the journey I take people on when I’m behind the decks. I like to buildup energy through the night, moving from chill and heady moments into hard, abrasive sound, keeping people engaged the entire time.

NOLA EDM: You’ve been making waves across the South this past year.

What do you think has connected most with crowds as your sound continues to evolve?

GZZRD: What’s connected most is the hip-hop influence. The high-energy hip-hop flips in my library tend to grab people fast. They combine high energy with hard flows which build up into the nastiest drops, coaxing fans of any genre into bumping their heads. My goal is to get everyone moving, but that moment when someone stops mid-conversation, looks at the booth, and makes the nastiest bass face. That’s when I know it landed. As my sound keeps evolving, I’m pushing beyond traditional 140, and focusing more on blending trap, experimental bass, and unexpected genres. There’s also a GZZRD downtempo set coming, so definitely keep an eye out for that.

NOLA EDM: This night blends jazz, live elements, and deep dubstep.

How does that kind of lineup influence the way you approach a set at The Rabbit Hole?

GZZRD: This set is very DEER GUTS influenced. There’s a heavy focus on percussion over sound design, leaving space for Spida Mane to really take control of the room and drive the energy. When you mix that with tasteful, beautiful instrumentals, it creates a dynamic that feels raw and intentional. It’s designed to move the room in a way that feels both heavy and alive.

NOLA EDM: You’re debuting a brand-new project, Deer Guts, alongside Spida.

How did this collaboration come together, and what made now the right time to launch it?

GZZRD: Spida and I have been close for a while, and every time we link the energy is intoxicating. We’re on the same wavelength creatively, with the same goals and a lot of shared influences. From the first time we really connected, it felt like linking with a long-lost brother. DEER GUTS was inevitable. The project channels the energy of a traditional British MC but filters it through our own lens. It’s dirty, it’s Southern, it’s aggressive, and it’s unapologetic. That’s DEER GUTS.

NOLA EDM: The Rabbit Hole is known for late-night energy and immersive sound.

What kind of atmosphere are you hoping to create for the crowd on January 10?

GZZRD: I want to fully encapsulate the crowd and guide them through an experience where they can get completely lost in the music. Dancing is a huge focus, but more than anything I want to create a moment that hits the crowd on a deep level. If I leave the room knowing at least one person was absolutely wrecked, in the best way possible by the set, then I did my job. With this Deer Guts set we aim to keep the energy high. I fully trust spida to deliver the hottest bars and curate a pathway between artist and crowd.

NOLA EDM: What do you hope people walk away feeling after hearing a GZZRD DUBS set live?

GZZRD: I want people to walk away with a, “what the fuck just happened” feeling. My goal is to twist and stretch people’s minds with sound, pulling them into a journey they didn’t expect. Deep, enveloping bass to lock them in, followed by heavy drops and detailed ear candy that rips everything wide open. That balance is what a GZZRD set is all about.
